Chico Police Department were called to Food Maxx grocery store in California, US, on Sunday afternoon after a passerby discovered a man's body in a shopping trolley

A man's decomposing body was found dumped in a shopping trolley outside a supermarket and left for "several days."

A passerby was walking near the Food Maxx grocery store in Chico, California, US, when they made the grim discovery at around 4.15pm on Sunday afternoon.

The witness phoned emergency services after finding the unidentified man covered in wounds and wrapped in a plastic sheet outside the supermarket.

Chico Police Department were called to the scene and found the shopping trolley which contained the man.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Cops confirmed the man suffered visible injuries to his body which has prompted them to launch a murder investigation.

Detective Brian Miller believes the body was left in the shopping trolley for several days before being discovered by a passerby.

Police have obtained CCTV of the trolley being moved to supermarket which appears to show a potential suspect moving the body.

Mr Miller said: "We were able to see some movement. We were able to see a shopping cart, a suspect, and the decedent moving on the sidewalk here."

Investigators returned to the scene on Monday and took more samples of blood which had dropped to the ground outside the grocery store.

Police confirmed an autopsy is underway to try and determine the man's cause of death.

The discovery of the body comes just days after a missing 13-year-old boy was found in a lake in Kansas, US.

Jayden Robker, from Kansas, US, had been skateboarding and trading Pokemon cards near Lakeview Terrace Mobile Home Park on February 2.

The Police Department of Gladstone and Kansas City, Missouri, confirmed a body located on Friday in a nearby pond was Jayden.

The schoolboy was last spotted on CCTV at a local grocery store at around 3.30pm, which is a mile from his home.

Mum Heather Robke had woken up for her night shift at 10.40pm to discover her son hadn't returned home.

Heartbroken Heather told KCTV5 on Sunday: "I’m heartbroken. It's very hard to take in this information.

"I’m still in shock and I’ve cried all day. It's a lot to take in at one time.

"I just know that they tell me based on what they’ve done on the autopsy that there was no foul play."
