The UK’s cheapest supermarkets revealed in Which? report

Aldi has been named the UK’s cheapest supermarket yet again, the first to be

Aldi has been named the UK's cheapest supermarket yet again, the first to be crowned the cheapest for 12 months in a row.

The budget supermarket took the crown for May in findings released today (June 6) by Which? who found shoppers could save £18 on a basket of items compared to the most expensive store.

The title marks Aldi's reign as the cheapest supermarket for 12 consecutive months.

A basket of 39 items cost Aldi shoppers £68.60 on average over the course of the month, with the same shop totalling £86.91 in Waitrose.

Aldi beat off competition from closest rival Lidl, who's same basket cost£70.51 — a difference of £1.91 — and has remained the UK's cheapest supermarket since May 2022.

On a bigger shop this month, Asda was yet again the cheapest in the larger trolley of groceries, a title it has held since January 2020.

For the most up-to-date figures, for May 2023, it cost £332.40 on average for a trolley of items, beating the next cheapest, Morrisons, which came in at £334.47, by just £2.07.

Waitrose was yet again the most expensive, costing £31.59 more than Asda, totalling £363.99, on average, for the trolley of comparable goods.

A spokesman for Which? said: "This latest pricing analysis from Which? demonstrates that shoppers can make considerable savings on their groceries depending on where they buy their food. However, with even budget ranges and prices at the discounters rising significantly, and the traditional supermarkets’ convenience stores failing to offer or stock budget lines, the consumer champion believes supermarkets must do more to help their customers.

"Retailers should be helping customers by making sure affordable basic ranges are available in all branches, including convenience stores, as well as improving unit pricing on all products, so that customers can easily work out the best value for them."

In April, there was just a 65p difference between Aldi and Lidl, with a basket of 39 items costing Aldi shoppers £69.99 on average, and the same basket in Lidl costing £70.64.

Aldi was also named the cheapest supermarket for March, again beating Lidl by the smallest of margins, this time 25p, and Waitrose by £20.

The previous Which? report also looked at the cost of a larger trolley of 135 items, with researchers looking at prices daily to work out where is the best value supermarket to get your weekly shop from.

Which? also undertakes a report at the end of each year, on where the best place to shop is, for value for money.

Discount retailer Aldi was the cheapest monthly for seven out of 12 months in 2022, closely followed by Lidl, which was the cheapest for the five other months.

Aldi's average basket price was £68.60.

Lidl shoppers paid an average of £70.51.

The supermarket's average basket cost was £77.13

The average Asda basket cost in April was £76.45.

The average cost for Tesco customers was £77.56.
