It's electric! Boogie woogie, woogie!

Electric cars are in the headlines these days, dominating discussions everywhere from climate change summits to RV shows. And while we’ve seen some concept campers that can be pulled by an electric car or are covered in solar panels, none made a bigger splash than Volkswagen's I.D. Buzz microbus. Originally displayed at the Detroit Auto Show in 2017, the I.D. Buzz is a high-tech version of the classic Kombi van with loads of amenities. It's slated to go into production by 2022, but this week at the IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Hannover, Germany, we got a peek at the I.D. Buzz cargo version.

Made for businesses and anyone hauling product from place to place, the I.D. Buzz Cargo bus is an on-the-go office on wheels. The light commercial van boasts a solar roof, three front-row seats, and a middle seat that folds down and transforms into a workspace with an integrated laptop. As a level four autonomous vehicle, you can either drive it or let the computer do the work.

And while this isn't a camper, it's still a cool look at what urban commercial vehicles will look like in the future, with an intelligent shelving system that lets you track stock levels throughout the day's deliveries. The battery pack provides a charge for about 200-340 miles, and a fast-charge option can get the vehicle up to 80 percent in 30 minutes.

We could see the cargo version of the I.D. Buzz hit the European market as early as 2021, a year earlier than Volkswagen plans to bring the passenger I.D. Buzz to the U.S. And Volkswagen isn't the only company investing big on the electric side of things in the camper and van world; Nissan recently debuted a zero-emission, factory-built pop-top camper that's completely electric.
